Another success for the Potboys Golf Association

Wednesday 9th October saw the PGA tour move to Etchinghill for another keenly contested match against the Wednesday Boys. Such was the aura of this prestigious event that the competitors waived their appearance fees and prize money.
Two teams of five attended the Leas course. The Potboys were missing their key player, Terry Wilmshurst, who was fogbound in Bermuda, but were grateful to include two associates, Paul Smith and Tony Parker, both well known on the Tour. Will the membership secretary please note that this does prompt thoughts that the squad could do with one or two more Cribbers taking up the game. The Wednesday boys were as enthusiastic as ever, wiping away previous defeats citing technicalities like excessive handicaps.
The match went to the Potboys once again by a stableford margin of eighteen points. Top Potboy scorer was Peter Fairweather with thirty eight points and top Wednesday Boy scorer was Alan Barker with thirty four points. Modesty forbids the writer naming the winner of the "nearest the pin" and "longest drive" competitions. Sportsmanship was of a very high standard whilst remaining competitive. Fortunately, one minor disaster was averted when the WB captain lost control of his trolley on a steep gradient and nearly felled his opposite number.
Another very enjoyable golf day and we look forward to another match in the future.

International Golf Tour comes to Norfolk
6 Pot Boys took on the Norfolk leg of the International golf Tour and convened at Barnham Broom for the 4th/5th July event.
The weather threw the first curve ball by starting the English Summer. Temperatures in excess of 10°C were experienced, necessitating change of tournament clothing. So away went the mittens, woolly hats and padded trousers, to be replaced with a rare assortment of shorts and headwear.
The entry for this prestigious event comprised three regular Friday night potboys; Peter Fairweather, Viv Pritchard and Clive Medhurst, plus Graham Atkins, making a rare visit to the UK. Our most distant country member, Dennis attended too and our chum Tony Parker was granted a wild card entry in view of his detailed knowledge of the courses and facilities.
Thursday’s round was held on the lush Valley course and included “nearest the pin” competition. It took place on the tricky downhill par three 7th hole and was won by Graham with a precision tee shot. Clive was left looking in the heather for his ball for some time afterwards. Tony also decided that, for undisclosed reasons, his leading group should defer attempting the 10th and 11th hole until after playing the 18th! Anyway we all got back to the clubhouse in one piece but severe dehydration was evident judging by the bar bill. A pleasant dinner was taken followed by some Cribbage. On Friday, following a hearty breakfast, round two took place on the Hill course. Maybe it was not as tight as the Valley course but it was equally capable of hiding our golf balls in the rough and ponds. The “longest drive” competition on the expansive 12th hole was won by Tony. During lunch afterwards the competition manager declared that the Viv was overall champion with an impressive combined total of 69 handicap points for the two rounds.
Many thanks to Tony for arranging the trip. It was a very enjoyable couple of days and it was agreed that similar event should be held annually, hopefully with a few more Guys.
POT BOYS GOLF SOCIETY COMES OF AGE
Friday 8th February, 2008 saw the first venture into the European Golf Tour for the Potboys.
At the invitation of our arch cribbage rivals, the Wednesday Boys, five potboys travelled to Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club for a somewhat harrowing day which started with a splendid full English breakfast, intended to soften us up, after which we struggled to the first tee for the golf.
The breakfast trick was only the first of several dubious tactics that the Wednesday Boys tried. The next one was to give us advice about such things as the direction in which to hit the ball! But with some exceptions we didn’t fall for that one either. Also, they turned up with twice as many players including ex-pot boy Dave "the mole" Watson. But we decided that two-to-one was probably fair, especially since the Stableford scores were to be averaged.
It was a close result. All tried hard and came in with reasonable scores but top scorer was Graham Atkins who scored a majestic 33 points and this score took our average above the Wednesday Boys so we won! We were presented with a superb trophy during after-match tea and cake.
Many thanks to John Pateman for organising a great day which we thoroughly enjoyed. A rematch on home ground in the Autumn has been agreed in principle, details to be confirmed.

"Golf in a Day" Friday 26th September 2002
Seven intrepid members swapped cards for clubs, pegs for pins and beer for balls as they spent a glorious day at Boughton Golf Club being tutored by Ian.
So, how successful was Ian's teaching?
The course was 9 holes, each hole was par 3, making the total par 27.
